Day 3: Can You Teach Me How To Dance Real Slow?
So I took my senior year of high school through correspondence in order to focus on ballet training, and thus, never went to my prom. Not that I ever had any designs on going anyway. I always fantasized about being in the band that played prom, like so many a Marty McFly. It always struck me that nobody in high school seemed particularly keen on forming a band. Aside from the musical elements, I had always assumed that forming a band was just something that any musically capable (or incapable) group of people did in high school. In a way, every one of our shows makes me feel like I’m in a prom band. But, you know, with less acne, and more legal drinking, and stuff.
Benefits of adulthood aside, this song is loaded with anime references, and at over 6 minutes, it’s by far the longest track on the album. When we first played it live, I would break into a guitar solo in the coda, but something about it just didn’t seem to fit. Then, we met Nick
Nick “Sexyfingers” L’Heureux hadn’t been to an open mic before, but for whatever reason, he decided to play the open mic at Austin’s Coffee the same night Ryan and I went. As soon as he mentioned that he was a classical saxophonist, I asked him to come by my house to work on a few songs, and soon, he was part of our lineup. Suddenly, songs like “Space Cowboy” and “When I’m 43″took on new life with the added punch of an alto saxophone. But nothing within our repertoire was better suited to Nick than today’s song, which still serves as a great excuse for him to cut loose.
