Hop in our ’78 Cadillac and buckle up: we’re rolling out to hit up the number 1 lunch spot in O-Town! We wanted to kick things off with a song in the longstanding tradition of funk songs about funking. Ain’t It Funky Now, We Want The Funk, Play That Funky Music; so many of the biggest hits of the 70s funk era were just songs extolling the virtues of funking, whatever that meant to the listener.
We like to think this track has a similar stank; something you could play in the back of a Caddy, or out of a boom box on a street corner on a hot July afternoon to get the whole block bumpin’. Or funkin’, given the context of what I just said. Enjoy!
Today's bonus video is a mini documentary about how we became a band, and a recap of what we've been up to over the last year!
Wondering why you're here? Watch this!
This song, rather unusually, was actually written around the bass part, which is probably why the verse chord structure is so simple, but sometimes the simplest stuff is also the funkiest.
We had tried for a solid year to come up with a song title that actually made use of the word “funk”, and while messing around at rehearsal one day, we stumbled backwards into “let me get a piece of that funk”, which works not only as a title in and of itself, but as a nod to the name of the band. who doesn’t like a tasty piece of pie and/or funk?
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Holdin’ up the line at Donnie’s Pizza at 3
On Friday afternoon with Donnie starin’ at me
Expectin’ me to order pepperoni instead
I leaned up on the counter and said
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Swimmin’ at the local pool I started to drown
The life guard came a runnin’ when he saw me go down
I coughed up water in his face, then he kicked me in
The deep end when I muttered to him
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
I guess it’s just non-sequitur
I any tie or place reserve
The right to make my simple request
Somewhere in my vicinity
That someone lay the funk on me
Don’t know why, but no one’s done it yet
My brother tied the knot and when he asked me to be
His best man I was honored, when I got up to speak
For all our friends and family I opened my mouth
And shocked them with the words that came out
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
Let me get a piece of that funk (Yeah)
